Story Prompt from History: Waves on a Windless Sea
Irene Dykstra had a big dream: become a published author. Alzheimers caught up with her before she could realize that dream, but she left behind a folder of newspaper clippings that inspired her story ideas. She was my children’s g-g grandmother, and I inherited her collection. I’m planning on sharing one clip a week in her memory, and I’d love to hear how they inspire you!
Waves in Dance On Windless Sea
NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (AP)-A mysterious dance of mighty 40-foot waves on a windless sea caused the liner America to arrive 14; hours late Thursday from England and Eire.
The liner’s mystified master, Commodore Harry Manning, hero of many daring rescues, said “it was a big, dead sea without whitecaps” spread in a saucer-shaped area some 700 miles in circumference centered about 300 miles east of New York.
“In all my 35 years at sea I have never encountered such a strange manifestation of the ocean,” Manning said.
“In all my 35 years at sea I have never encountered such a strange manifestation of the ocean,” Manning said. “On Tuesday at midnight we encountered a large area of confused sea and we did not get through the center of it until 12 hours later when we were near Nantucket.
“The wild movement throughout the entire area mystified me because there was no wind. Forty-foot waves beat on us from all sides.”
