My trip to the Vision Christian Writers Conference
Have you ever been to a generic Christian women’s conference? They’ve never really been my cup of tea, maybe because on the whole they feel unfocused. We go through Proverbs 31, but… Proverbs 31 covers a lot of ground, and, to avoid being cultish, we remind ourselves that it isn’t a to-do list. Which it isn’t.
But avoiding to-do list also means less practical, fun, hands on, learning.
However, as I learned this last month, a Christian writer’s conference, which is built around
1. Jesus
and
2. a particular craft or task or way to honor him,
is an incredible experience. Honestly, I think I’d enjoy going to a Christian leatherworkers conference, or a Christian loggers conference, or. . . I’m having a hard time coming up with an example that sounds boring. Even a Christian computer programmer’s conference would be fun, assuming one had a translator. And, boy oh boy, would I need a translator! (Can you imagine a women’s retreat with Bible studies and worship, and also workshops on pottery, self-defense, poetry, Mexican cuisine, etc? Wouldn’t that be ah-mazing?!)
All of which to say, I enjoyed my time at the Vision Christian Writer’s conference immensely (despite missing my kids and my man like mad), and left feeling incredibly, outrageously blessed. My wicked little short story won a prize, and I was voted the “Most Promising Writer” by the faculty and staff, which was a shock, especially since I didn’t even know the award existed. It’s given to someone who stands out, and I have to admit… I stood out.
Horizontally.
By about 12″.
I am, after all, eight months pregnant.
